[THESAFEKOREA] EV Fire, Rapid fire propagation Early response is critical, SAFEDOME

EV Fire, Rapid fire propagation Early response is critical

A vehicle fire recently occurred in the parking lot of an auto repair shop in Andong, Gyeongbuk. The fire was extinguished about 20 minutes after it broke out, but the flames spread from the burning vehicle to nearby parked cars. As a result, a total of five vehicles were damaged, including the vehicle where the fire initially started. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in this incident. However, it highlights how a vehicle fire that occurs in a parking area can quickly spread to nearby vehicles, even in an outdoor environment.

Only 1 min 15 sec for fire to spread to a nearby vehicle during thermal runaway

Vehicle fires often do not end with damage to a single vehicle. In places where vehicles are parked close together, such as parking lots, heat and flames from the burning vehicle can spread to nearby vehicles, leading to a chain reaction of fire spread. In particular, in the case of electric vehicles, when battery thermal runaway occurs, studies have shown that the fire can spread to an adjacent vehicle in as little as 1 minute and 15 seconds, which is a very short period of time.

Firefighting Golden Time – 7 Minutes

The Firefighting Golden Time refers to the time required for professional firefighters to arrive and begin fire suppression after a fire occurs. It generally means the first 7 minutes after a fire breaks out. What kind of initial response is taken within this golden time can significantly affect the scale of damage caused by the fire.

Initial response determines the scale of damage

Fire extinguishers have difficulty controlling the sustained heat generated by battery fires, and sprinklers can also malfunction or fail to activate, making it difficult to rely on them alone. In addition, fire blanket–type suffocation methods present practical challenges for ordinary people to use in real fire situations.Considering the unique characteristics of electric vehicle fires, the need for a new initial response system that can suppress fire spread within the firefighting golden time is becoming increasingly important.

SAFEDOME – Electric Vehicle Fire Spread Prevention System

To address these challenges, SAFEDOME was developed as an all-in-one disaster safety solution that integrates the functions of a fire barrier, sprinkler, fire blanket, and water spray system. It can be operated by a single person who first discovers the fire, enabling a rapid response and helping to secure the firefighting golden time.

Using auxiliary equipment, the system can be fully enclosed within 10 seconds, and when connected to a fire hydrant, it induces cooling and fire suppression through an internal piping system. During an actual EV fire test, three thermal explosions occurred; however, it was confirmed that there was no damage to the performance of the frame or the fire-resistant fabric.

SAFEDOME Installation Cases

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to increase, the importance of early response to EV fires is also growing. To help prevent the spread of such fires, SAFEDOME is currently being adopted by various organizations, including companies, hospitals, and residential complexes such as apartment buildings.
