Fire Breaks Out in an EV Awaiting Repair

Recently, a fire broke out in an electric vehicle that was being stored in an open lot in Incheon while awaiting repairs.

Fortunately, no one was injured. However, the fire damaged a total of nine vehicles, including the vehicle where the fire originated and several nearby vehicles.

Fire authorities deployed personnel and equipment and extinguished the fire approximately 18 minutes after receiving the report. The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Vehicles Awaiting Repair or in Storage Also Require Fire Safety Precautions

This incident requires particular attention because the fire occurred not while the vehicle was being driven or charged, but while the electric vehicle was being stored awaiting repairs.

Even when an electric vehicle involved in an accident or impact appears to have no major external damage, its battery may have sustained internal damage.

In locations such as repair shops and vehicle storage areas, where multiple vehicles are parked close together, a fire starting in one vehicle can quickly spread to nearby vehicles and cause greater damage.

Therefore, facilities that repair or store electric vehicles for extended periods should not only regularly monitor vehicle conditions but also establish initial response measures to help prevent a fire from spreading to surrounding vehicles.

EV Fire Spread Prevention System, SAFEDOME

SAFEDOME is an initial fire response system that can be moved and deployed by a single person to help prevent a vehicle fire from spreading.

When connected to a fire hydrant, its internal sprinkler system continuously sprays water to cool the vehicle and battery.

This helps contain the fire before professional firefighters arrive, reducing the risk of it spreading to nearby vehicles or buildings and supporting more effective follow-up response by the fire department.

Advance Preparation Is Essential in Areas with High Vehicle Density

Repair shops, vehicle storage facilities, logistics centers, and parking areas often have multiple vehicles parked close together, making them particularly vulnerable to the spread of fire.

Although it is difficult to predict when or where a fire may occur, the extent of the damage can vary greatly depending on the precautions taken in advance.

Let this incident serve as an opportunity to identify potential fire hazards, ensure that appropriate initial response equipment is in place, and review the safety of our everyday surroundings.
