[THESAFEKOREA] Forklift-Related Fire at a Paint Warehouse

Forklift-Related Fire at a Paint Warehouse

A major fire recently broke out at a materials warehouse operated by a paint company in Ulsan.

Fire authorities believe the fire started while forklift operations were underway inside the warehouse and are investigating the exact cause.

The fire spread rapidly due to flammable materials stored in the warehouse, including paint. It extended to surrounding properties, including parked vehicles, nearby studio apartments, and an automobile repair shop.

One resident of a nearby villa was killed, while four others, including warehouse personnel and local residents, were injured.

The main fire was brought under control in approximately 38 minutes. However, paint and other flammable materials made it difficult to extinguish the remaining flames, and full extinguishment took approximately four hours.

The Growing Challenge of Fire Response in Extreme Heat

As extreme heat continues across the country, high temperatures can increase the risk of fire and make firefighting operations at the scene even more challenging.

Particular caution is required at warehouses storing flammable materials such as paint and thinner, as seen in this incident. Once a fire breaks out, the flames can spread rapidly and may be accompanied by toxic gases and the risk of explosions.

SAFEDOME: Forklift Fire Response System

Warehouses that store materials with a high risk of fire spread, such as paint, can turn even a small ignition source into a large-scale fire.

Therefore, in addition to routine fire prevention and safety management, it is essential to establish an initial response system that can slow the spread of fire immediately after ignition and reduce damage to nearby facilities and loss of life.

SAFEDOME: One-Person Response to Forklift Fires

It is important to conduct regular inspections of forklifts and electrical equipment, store flammable materials separately, provide safety training for workers, and inspect firefighting facilities. Worksites should also be equipped with fire response equipment that can be deployed quickly in an emergency.

Although fires can occur without warning, response systems and equipment prepared in advance can help slow the spread of flames and provide valuable time for workers and nearby residents to evacuate safely.

This incident serves as an important reminder for industrial facilities that handle or store flammable materials to review their fire prevention measures and initial response preparedness.
